This course is suitable for biomedical and clinical researchers with no programming experience. It is not suitable for experienced bioinformatics personnel for whom we recommend the advanced API workshop.

The course will cover (with hands-on exercises):

  1. Introduction to Ensembl : origin, goals and organization of the Ensembl project
  2. Worked example: guided tour of the most important pages of the Ensembl website
  3. Data mining with BioMart: retrieving datasets using the data mining tool BioMart
  4. Evaluating genes and transcripts: how are Ensembl gene and transcripts predictions made?
  5. Variations: SNPs, haplotypes, linkage disequilibrium
